Backdropbook design.   2025
Cosplay, as a materialized form of fan practice, is often centered around the notion of the character’s “presence.” The cosplayer’s body becomes a tangible vessel for fantasy, allowing fictional identities to momentarily take on a sense of reality through physical performance.

In “Backdrop”, I employ digital methods to erase the figures from Cosplay photographs collected online, leaving only the backgrounds that were originally constructed to serve the characters. In these images where the subject is absent, the original visual orientation dissolves, revealing instead an unexpected, silent stillness.

In a sense, Backdrop is both a reconstruction of how we look at images and a subtle act of counter-narration. It attempts to move away from the dominant axis of “subject and viewer,” making space for the quiet, often overlooked areas within the frame to come into focus.
